VALLEY SPRINGS – Sam McMacken homered while totaling five RBIs and Kyle Krogman pitched eight solid innings as the Brookings Cubs dropped the Valley Springs Rats 12-3 in an amateur baseball game Thursday night.
McMacken finished 4-for-5, adding a pair of doubles.
Krogman gave up three runs – two earned – on five hits and five walks with eight strikeouts. He also had a solid day at the plate out of the leadoff spot, going 4-for-6 with a double.
Nine of the Cubs’ 16 hits went for extra bases, including eight doubles.
Jared Tschetter and Ty Schneider opened the second inning with back-to-back walks. Jacob Meyer came through with a two-out RBI single to get Brookings on the board.
Valley Springs answered with a run in the bottom of the second.
McMacken led off the fourth with a home run over the fence in center field to put the Cubs on top for good.
Jacolby Anderson followed with a walk, before Mike Graybill and Meyer both drew two-out walks to load the bases. Austin Koenig made it 3-1 with an RBI single.
Jeff Fish, who doubled but was stranded in the opening frame, singled and reached third on an error in the fifth. McMacken’s run-scoring single pushed the margin to 4-1.
Krogman opened the seventh with a single and scored on a one-out double by McMacken. Anderson added an RBI double and, following a Tschetter walk, Schneider tacked on a two-run double to give the Cubs an 8-1 cushion.
The Rats scored in the bottom of the seventh.
Krogman singled and Fish walked in the eighth. McMacken tagged a two-RBI double to make it 10-2.
Valley Springs added one run in the bottom of the eighth.
Schneider led off the ninth with his second two-bagger of the game. Graybill followed with an RBI double.
Krogman capped the scoring with a run-scoring double of his own with two outs.
Fish pitched a hitless ninth, allowing one walk.
Brookings (14-2), which has won four consecutive games, heads to Castlewood to face the Monarchs tonight at 7:30.
