Medalist Hayden Shieh leads Santa Clara to win at The Jackrabbit

VALENTINE, Neb. – Santa Clara’s Hayden Shieh and the Broncos held on to sweep the titles at The Jackrabbit, which concluded Tuesday at The Prairie Club - Dunes Course.

Shieh led throughout, closing with a 2-under-par 70 for a 15-under 201 total and a one-stroke victory. He made two birdies and 16 pars in the third round.

Shieh opened with a 64 (10 birdies) on Sunday and followed with a 67 Monday. He finished the event with 18 birdies and three bogeys.

The Broncos built a big lead with a 23-under 265 on Saturday. They shot 275 Monday and 285 Tuesday for a 39-under 828 total and a three-shot victory over Tennessee (276-271-281—828).

Santa Clara got a combined 37 birdies and an eagle from its four scorers in the first round alone.

Kansas (275-276-283) finished third with an 834 total, while Boise State (278-277-286) and South Carolina (282-275-284) tied for fourth at 841.

South Dakota State shot 300 in the final round and was 11th in the 13-team field with an 871 total. The Jackrabbits opened with rounds of 290 and 281.

The Volunteers’ Rhys Nevin-Wharton made a tournament-high 20 birdies and was runner-up with a 14-under 202 (66-68-68) total.

The Gamecocks’ Scott Stevens (68-67-70), the Jayhawks’ Daniel Hudson (67-67-71) and Houston’s Michael Perras (71-69-65) tied for third with 205 totals. Perras made three eagles and played the par-5s in 10-under overall.

UMKC’s Francois Lagraulet (65-71-70), the Broncos’ Matthew McCarty (65-69-72) and UCF’s Bobby Bai (70-63-73) tied for sixth at 206. Bai’s 63 on Day 2 was the low round of the tourney, as he totaled 18 birdies in the 54-hole event.

Oklahoma State’s Nick Heinen (70-70-67—207) and Tennessee’s Spencer Cross (69-68-71—208) rounded out the top 10.

Fifty of the 81 golfers shot par or better, while 43 finished in red numbers.

Alejandro Perazzo paced the Jackrabbits, finishing tied for 20th at 5-under 211 (68-71-72).

Jared Nicolls closed strong to tie for 37th at 2-under 214 (77-68-69).

Alejandro Restrepo (70-72-75—217) tied for 51st, Jaxon Lynn (75-70-84—229) tied for 77th and Michael Duch (77-73-86—236) finished 81st.

Competing as individuals for SDSU, Naqiuddin Fuad (75-74-72—221) tied for 62nd, and Zach Sackett (76-74-79—229) and Jacob Otta (78-74-77—229) tied for 77th.

SDSU competes in the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate on Sunday through Tuesday in College Grove, Tenn.

Notes: South Carolina’s Keenan Huskey had a wild six-hole stretch on Sunday. He birdied Nos. 5-6 and then made a hole-in-one on the 161-yard par-3 seventh hole. He double-bogeyed No. 8 and bogeyed No. 9, but made a birdie 3 at the 10th. He parred his other 12 holes in the round. … Santa Clara’s Derek Ackerman had a six-bagger in Round 1. … Stevens led the field in par-4 scoring (8-under) and McCarty led the field in par-3 scoring (6-under). ... Perazzo had 41 pars, tied for the most in the field. … The course played 7,239 yards in the first round, 7,221 yards in the second and 7,549 yards in the third. … The scoring average was 71.38 in Round 1, 70.95 in Round 2 and 73.32 in Round 3.
