Megan Mingo wins Summit League Women’s Golf Championship title

Four Jackrabbits finish in top 11 as SDSU takes second in team standings

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. – Megan Mingo made history Tuesday.

The senior from Yankton became the first Jackrabbit in school history to win the Summit League Women’s Golf Championship title, shooting a 1-over-par 73 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 6-over 222 at the 6,142-yard, par-72 ArborLinks.

Mingo led wire-to-wire.

Denver’s Jessica Carty, who entered the day three shots behind Mingo in a tie for second place, was runner-up at 224. She closed with a 72.

The Pioneers won their fourth consecutive team title, rallying from a two-shot deficit with a third-round 293 for a 906 total.

South Dakota State (301) dropped to second at 912. It marked the Jackrabbits’ second consecutive runner-up finish and fourth overall since becoming eligible for the event in 2008.

North Dakota State (311) was a distant third with a 945 total.

Oral Roberts (308) was fourth at 946, IUPUI (318) fifth at 957, Western Illinois (316) sixth at 963, South Dakota (309) seventh at 964, Omaha (317) eighth at 974 and IPFW (334) at 1,011.

The Pioneers put all five of their golfers in the top eight, while the Jackrabbits had four in the top 11.

SDSU freshman Teresa Toscano (75), Denver’s Mariell Bruun (73) and NDSU’s Natalie Roth (74) tied for third with 227 totals. Toscano also began the day three shots behind Mingo in a tie for second.

The Pioneers’ Jessica Dreesbeimdieke (72) finished at 228, Sophie Newlove (76) at 229 and Lauren Whyte (76) at 230 to place sixth through eighth, respectively.

Jackrabbit freshman Sydney Bormann (76) and the Golden Eagles’ Kennedy Ishee (77) tied for ninth at 231.

SDSU senior Hallie Getz (77) took 11th with a 54-hole tally of 232.

The Jaguars’ Aneta Abrahamova (80) was 12th at 233 and teammate MeKenzie Hilsmeyer (76) ended up 13th with a 234 total.

Also for the Jackrabbits, senior Islamiah Fuad (77) finished 39th at 253.

Mingo birdied the 483-yard, par-5 first hole for the third consecutive round to get things going Tuesday.

She bogeyed the third but birdied the fifth en route to a 1-under 35 on the front nine. Mingo led Toscano by four strokes and Carty by six with nine holes remaining.

She bogeyed the 12th and 13th holes as her lead dipped to three over Toscano and Carty.

Mingo came up with a key birdie at the 504-yard, par-5 16th – a hole she made double bogey on the previous two rounds. Carty, playing alongside Mingo, also birdied to stay within three.

Mingo parred the 17th and bogeyed the 18th to secure the two-shot win.

Toscano made a double bogey on her opening hole but countered with birdies at the fifth and seventh.

Following five pars in a row, she bogeyed the 13th. Toscano bogeyed Nos. 17 and 18.

Bormann, who is from Parkston, shot in the 70s for the third consecutive round.

She birdied the first but made five bogeys over her final 15 holes.

Getz’s round of 77 included two birdies and seven bogeys.

Fuad, who shot 84-92 in the first two rounds, closed strong with the 77 as she totaled two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.

Mingo posted her third career top-seven finish in the Summit League tournament as she was seventh as a junior in 2016 and tied for sixth as a sophomore in 2015. She added a 20th-place showing as a freshman in 2014.

Getz, a Pierre native, just missed her third consecutive top-10 finish. She was 10th in 2016 and tied for eighth in 2015 after not competing in the event as a freshman in 2014.

Notes: Mingo led the field in par-4 scoring (4.2) and tied for first in birdies (10). ... Mingo’s first-round 69 was tied for the lowest 18-hole score in tournament history. Her 36-hole score of 149 was the second lowest all-time and her 54-hole score of 222 was one shot out of the top nine in tourney history. … Mingo, the MVP, and Toscano were named to the all-tournament team. … It marked the first time in school history two SDSU golfers finished in the top three at the Summit League Championship. Hillary Gerstner (third) and Amanda Rosol (fifth) were both in the top five in 2008. … Mingo is the third SDSU women’s golfer overall to be crowned league champion. Two Jackrabbits combined to win three North Central Conference titles in the Division II era, as Carin Doyle was victorious in 1982 and 1983 and Amy Lewis prevailed in 1995.
