Meredith C. Barron, 94, of Flandreau, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Edgewood Vista Senior Living in Flandreau. 

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, with a prayer service beginning at 4 p.m.

Meredith Charles Barron was born on Aug. 1, 1922, son of Charles and Sarah (McNeil) Barron, in Pipestone, Minn. He grew up in the Flandreau area, attending rural Keith School and Flandreau High School, graduating in 1941. He farmed with his father until enlisting with the United States Army Air Force in October 1942. He served in England, loading bombs into the airplanes. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. Meredith married Darleen Southard on Aug. 15, 1943, and they had two children, Larry and Linda. 

After returning from the war, Meredith went back to farming in Moody County. Darleen died in December 1969. 

He married Opal Ford on April 1, 1989, in Pipestone, Minn. Meredith stayed out on the farm until 2013 when his health began to decline. He and Opal moved into assisted living in Flandreau. Meredith enjoyed hunting pheasants in his younger years. He participated in corn picking contests and was the South Dakota champion, going on to compete at the national level. Meredith was a member of the Farmers Union, Moody County Democrats, and was involved with the Soil Conservation District. 

Meredith is survived by his wife, Opal; children, Larry (Twyla) Barron of Flandreau and Linda (Mike) Wagner of Sioux Falls;  six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Zona (Vic) Sanderson; close family friend, Richard Haugen; Opal’s children, David (Candice), James (Colleen), Rebecca (Michael), Jerome (Martha), Clayton (Geraldine) and George (Cynthia); numerous grandchildren of Opal’s; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Meredith was preceded in death by his wife, Darleen and sister, Helen Barron.
