BROOKINGS – Mike Daum is the Summit League’s scoring king.

The senior from Kimball, Nebraska, dropped in 42 points Friday night as South Dakota State held off a game Southern squad for a 101-92 victory at Frost Arena.

Daum pushed his career total to 2,509 points.

“I honestly didn’t even know,” the 6-foot-9 forward said. “It’s cool. I feel like when I’m 50 or 60 I’ll look back on this and probably think it’s cooler than it is right now. But for me, it’s just getting ready for the next game, getting ready for the next practice.”

He passed UMKC’s Michael Watson (2,488 from 2000-04) for second place on the conference list in the first half before eclipsing the previous record of 2,503 held by Oral Roberts’ Caleb Green (2003-07) on a layup at the 5:50 mark of the second.

He now sits in 63rd in NCAA Division I history.

Daum passed a couple more notable players against the Jaguars, including Seattle’s Elgin Baylor (2,500) and Princeton’s Bill Bradley (2,503).

“Again, Mike continues to accomplish amazing things,” SDSU coach T.J. Otzelberger said of the league record. “The game just comes easy, scoring the ball comes easy so it’s certainly no surprise.

“I think it’s a credit to all the hard work he puts in – he’s an unbelievable young man and worker. We expect big things and he always answers the call that way.”

The Jackrabbits shot a Division I-era school-record 68.9 percent (31-of-45) from the field, including 7-of-15 from 3-point range, and went 32-of-36 at the foul line; however, they surrendered 92 points – more than half of which came on 16 treys – to a 1-8 Southern team.

“I thought Southern did a great job moving the basketball, getting in their drive-and-kick game; and obviously guys started knocking down shots and their confidence grew as the game went on,” said Otzelberger. “I’m not thrilled with our effort on the defensive end. I thought they had a great plan and they executed well; and I have a lot of respect for Coach (Sean) Woods. At the same time, we expect a higher standard from our guys and how we go about doing those things.

“We showed last week with the Kansas City and Northern Iowa games our capability on the defensive end of the floor, and I need to do a much better job as a head coach giving a sense of clarity of what that needs to look like day in and day out; but we’ll get that cleaned up.”

Daum sparked a first-half surge that saw the Jackrabbits turn a 21-19 deficit into a 46-37 advantage at the break. He had 22 points at halftime.

SDSU was in control throughout the second half but the Jaguars never went away, twice pulling within eight near the 3-minute mark.

Daum’s traditional 3-point play with 2:39 remaining put the Jackrabbits ahead 94-83 and all but sealed the deal.

“Well, a win is a win,” said Daum, who was 13-of-18 from the floor and 14-of-15 at the foul line while adding eight rebounds. “That’s as poor of an effort from me personally and from our entire team I would say in a game this year. We don’t need to look at their record, we don’t look at the guys they have – every game is about us and every game we need to go out and have this fire and intensity that we just didn’t have tonight.

“But at the end of the day, you get a win and you have to be happy about that.”

David Jenkins contributed 22 points.

Tevin King had a perfect shooting night – 4-of-4 FGs (1-of-1 3s) and 5-of-5 FTs – for 14 points.

Southern’s Sidney Umude scored 26 points, Richard Lee 24 (on eight treys) and Eddie Reese 21.

South Dakota State (8-3), which has won 25 in a row at home, plays host to Savannah State – another SWAC opponent – on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Notes: Daum became the 67th player in NCAA Division I history to score 2,500 career points. … Daum has 657 career made free throws, breaking the school record of 648 previously held by Nate Wolters. … Daum is a two-time Associated Press All-America honorable mention.
