Milbank, Garretson advance to quartefinals at State B Tourney

SIOUX FALLS – Milbank and Garretson advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals with wins on Monday night at the South Dakota Class B Amateur State Baseball Tournament at Ronken Field.

The Firechiefs scored runs late to down Miller/Wessington, 8-2, while the BlueJays shut out Akron, 3-0, in the late game.

Milbank and Garretson square off at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

After spotting the Outlaws a run in the top of the first inning, Milbank finally took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, and then, added three more in both the seventh and eighth frames to cruise into the quarterfinals.

Taylor Boerger went the distance on the mound for the Firechiefs as he gave up two earned runs on nine hits and a walk with nine strikeouts.

Lance Frogner’s two-run homer in the sixth put Milbank on top before Jacob Jackson drove in a run in the seventh with a single and then hit a double to plate another run in the eighth.

Ronnie Krause drove in two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth for the Firechiefs.

Cody Cotton suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over six frames. Casey Schlechter surrendered six runs – four earned – on five hits and three walks with a strikeout over the last two innings.

Brant Winter and Matt Randall batted in runs for the Outlaws as Randall finished with two hits and Juan Sabilier had two.

Brady Bonte broke the scoreless tie with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh before the BlueJays tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to move into the quarterfinals.

Patrick Whetham scattered five hits, walked two and struck out 11 to garner the win for Garretson. Derek Fischer struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

Jesse Brockhouse came through with a two-out, two-RBI single in the eighth for the final margin.

Austin Allard suffered the loss after giving up one earned run on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in seven frames.

Dan Smith allowed two unearned runs on a hit and a walk in the eighth before Brett Stolpe finished off the frame after giving up Brockhouse’s single.
