Mildred was born on June 7, 1931, to George and Henrietta (Duin) Hegerfeld in Brookings, South Dakota. She received her education in rural school in Brookings County and graduated from Elkton High School. Mildred married Herb Vaske on October 14, 1967, at St. William’s Catholic Church in Aurora, SD. After their marriage, they farmed in Brookings County until their retirement in 1992. They later moved into Brookings, where Mildred lived until her passing.

Mildred will be remembered for her love of baking, canning, and making rye bread and sauerkraut. She enjoyed being in her garden, playing cards, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends. Mildred was always willing to help someone else out when there was a need. She was a member of St. William’s Catholic Parish in Aurora and served on the ladies circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Even though Mildred did not have any grandchildren of her own, she loved being an adopted grandma to her close friends and neighbors.

Survivors include two sons: Scott Vaske of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, and Troy Vaske of New Hope, Minnesota; a daughter, Pam Hegerfeld of Spencer, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herb; sister, Betty DeMarteleare; and numerous brothers and sisters-in law.
