Miller, Rasmussen reach State semifinals

SIOUX FALLS – Bobcat senior Gus Miller and sophomore Luke Rasmussen posted a pair of wins to open the Class A State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the PREMIER Center.

Miller, the defending champion at 220 pounds, pinned his way into the semifinals at 285.

He stuck Harrisburg’s Josh Larsen in 1:07 in the first round and then dropped Yankton’s Trevor Ellis in 2:30 in the quarterfinals.

Rasmussen also dominated his opponents.

He posted a 17-0 technical fall in 5:18 versus Harrisburg’s Ethan Zimmer in the first round and then stuck Rapid City Stevens’ True Synhorst in 50 seconds in the quarterfinals.

At 138, Tyson Brandt opened with a 7-0 decision over Lennox’s Jacob Marshal. He was pinned by Stevens’ Declan Malone in 1:55 in the quarters.

Jaxon Bowes dropped a 7-2 decision to Mitchell’s Ryan McGinnis at 152 pounds. James Olson was pinned by Tea Area’s JT Panning in 32 seconds at 195.

The tourney continues today with first- and second-round consolation matches beginning at 9 a.m. and the championship semifinals at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Class B

A trio of Kingsbury County wrestlers won opening-round matches before falling in the quarterfinals.

Dylan Zell pinned Tri-Valley’s Lawson Loiseau in 1:35 to get things going in the 120-pound weightclass. He lost 6-0 to Parkston’s Riley Weber in the quarters.

Alec Dobson, wrestling at 138 pounds, won by fall versus Custer’s Jonathan Lewis in 1:29. He was pinned by Howard’s Lane Miller in 4:25 after that.

At 170, Gavin Holland picked up a 7-2 decision over Sioux Valley’s Seth Heidenreich in the opening round. He was pinned by McCook Central/Montrose’s Blake Gessner in 3:04 in the quarterfinals.

The Knights’ other four qualifiers lost by fall – Matthew Steffensen (132 pounds) in 1:38 to Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes’ Wyatt Talbott; Dylan Singrey (152) in 26 seconds to Burke/Gregory’s Frank Even; Owen Kerkvliet (195) in 1:53 to Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon’s Jordan Gall; and Kain Gilligan (220) in 1:15 to Winner Area’s Preston Norrid.

The Cossacks’ Skylar Trygstad dropped a 13-3 major decision to MCM’s Weston Remmers.

David Knutson (126) was pinned in 52 seconds by Philip Area’s Jadyn Coller. Joe Hornick (160) was pinned in 39 seconds by Redfield Area’s Dylan Whitley.

Flandreau’s Chase Reed (220) was edged 4-3 by Hot Springs’ Marcus Harkless. Hunter Witte (106) lost a 6-2 decision to Philip’s Kipp Cordes.

Class B State Dual Championships

Redfield Area defeated Kingsbury County 62-15 in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Dylan Zell tallied an 11-4 decision over Jacob Fehlman at 120 pounds.

Lane Holland pinned Keaton Rohlfs in 1:37 at 126 to tie the dual score at 9-9.

Alec Dobson won via forfeit at 138, leaving the score at 15-15.

The Pheasants won the final eight bouts – six via fall with a technical fall and a forfeit.

The tournament concludes today with the semifinals at 5 p.m., the third-place duals at 6:30 p.m. and the championships at 8 p.m.
