BROOKINGS – “This week, we’ve had some thefts from vehicles occurring – still,” Assistant Police Chief Derrick Powers said.

Five vehicles were reportedly burglarized in a two-day period, according to Brookings Police.

A vehicle was entered in the 1500 block of Fifth Street South during the early hours of Thursday morning and reported Thursday afternoon.

“A wallet was taken from a vehicle,” Powers said.

“It was unlocked,” he said, adding there was no damage to the vehicle.

Another report on Thursday morning was about a vehicle that was burglarized in the 1200 block of Christine Avenue sometime the previous night or early Thursday morning.

“A vehicle was entered and money was taken from the vehicle. The vehicle was unlocked,” Powers said.

“That same night, there was a vehicle in the 1300 block of Westminster Drive that was entered and a purse was taken from it,” Powers said.

A report was filed Wednesday regarding a vehicle in the 1200 block of 11th Street South.

“Two vehicles were entered and rummaged through and some loose change was missing,” Powers said, adding both were unlocked.

The Brookings Police have taken numerous reports of unlocked vehicles and garages being entered this summer so the suspects could go through the contents of vehicles. Often times, wallets, purses and other valuables are taken.

“We still have thefts occurring from vehicles,” Powers said. “People need to realize that they’re just continuing.”

Prevention is important, he warned last month.

“It’s easier for people to keep themselves from being a victim than, oftentimes, it is for us to apprehend the individuals who are committing the theft,” Powers said.
