Motorcyclist escapes injury in fire on Sixth St.

BROOKINGS – A motorcycle rider avoided injury after his vehicle caught fire on Sixth Street on Wednesday night, according to a news release from the Brookings Fire Department.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:08 p.m. near the intersection with 13th Street. The rider of the 2001 Triumph Sprint motorcycle noticed a gasoline leak, which turned into a fast-spreading fire after the fuel made contact with the hot engine, Fire Chief Pete Bolzer reported in the release.

Due to the rapid fire spread, the rider abandoned the motorcycle in the middle of Sixth Street. Two fire engines responded and were on scene for 30 minutes cleaning up debris and mitigating unburned gasoline after dousing the fire, Bolzer reported, adding no injuries were reported and that the motorcycle was a complete loss.
