Music teachers host annual piano conference in Brookings

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Music Teachers Association hosted the 2023 Piano Carnival for students of BMTA member teachers at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on Oct. 28.

This is one of several student events sponsored by the BMTA to improve music skills and have fun doing it. Fifty-seven students participated in 10 different events, each one testing their abilities at their own individual levels. Different skills tested include rhythm, theory, ear training, sight reading, performance of one memorized solo, scales, chords, cadences, arpeggios and stage performance.

In addition to mastering their skill challenges, a large majority of participants completed the musical scavenger hunt, joined in a variety of music-themed games and presented a variety of music-related projects.

Participating teachers included Diana Christiansen, Bethany Foote, Cynthia Jorgensen, Deb Kalsbeck, Jenni Karlen, Tammy Knudtson, Melanie Timmerman and Xuan Kuang. Also helping with events were college music students Rebekah Bonnemann, Max Donelan, Abigail Harper, Ellie Jaspers, Rebecca Michna and Kimberly Smith, as well as several moms, dads, husbands and friends.
