BROOKINGS – A Brookings man has been identified as the person who died Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash that occurred 4 miles west of Brookings.
A 2016 Freightliner semi-truck pulling a hazardous materials trailer was westbound on U.S. Highway 14 when the driver activated his hazard lights to stop at the railroad crossing near mile marker 415. As the driver completed the check and the semi-truck and trailer began moving forward again at about 12:30 p.m., a 1998 Chevrolet CK 109 pickup rear-ended the trailer.
Corey Kilber, the 47-year-old driver of the pickup, was not wearing a seatbelt and died of injuries sustained in the crash.
Joshua Aastrup, 42, of Sioux City, Iowa was driving the semi-truck. He was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. No charges are pending.
Damage to the trailer led to the leaking of less than one gallon of sodium hydroxide. The spill was contained by emergency responders.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
