BROOKINGS – A Renner man has been identified as the person who died in a rollover crash Saturday morning on Interstate 29, 7 miles west of Flandreau.

A 2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab SR5 pickup, pulling a trailer with a utility terrain vehicle on it, was northbound on I-29 when the driver hit a patch of ice and lost control at 10:26 a.m. Saturday at mile marker 114. The pickup entered the median, rolled and came to a final rest on its roof.

Kasper Malsam, 60, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle onto the interstate’s southbound lanes. He was struck by a southbound 2018 GMC Acadia SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An 11-year-old female passenger from Dell Rapids, who was in the pickup, received minor injuries. Thomas Sterzinger of Taunton, Minnesota, who was the 54-year-old male driver of the SUV, was not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.
