BROOKINGS – The Helpline Center recently announced that Sarah Mae Nelson was named the May 2020 Volunteer of the Month, an area-wide award program sponsored by the Helpline Center and First Bank and Trust.

Neslon has been a volunteer with Independent Living Choices for nine years and volunteers on a weekly basis.

Nelson contacts people with disabilities via email, social media and in-person visits on a monthly basis. She acts as a guide and mentor to her participants, and shares how she is independent. She has presented at the Brookings Area Peer Support Group and often provides valuable input on the ILC Facebook Peer Support Group page.

"Nelson is such a kind, talented, giving person as well as a gifted writer." Staff at Independent Living Choices said, “She is so deserving of this award and is one of our all-time best volunteers. She goes above and beyond and is so thoughtful. I can’t say enough wonderful things about her!”
