BROOKINGS – The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center will show “The Plow that Broke the Plains” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Founders Recital Hall.

This famous documentary, produced by the U.S. Government in 1936, was written and directed by Pere Lorentz. The showing is part of the center’s “Never Dark Thursday” series.

The film looks at the devastating and costly problems, including seasonal flooding and erosion of precious topsoil, associated with the Mississippi River system and promotes more Federal projects to remedy the situation. It is about what happened to the Great Plains of the United States when a combination of farming practices and environmental factors led to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.

Admission is free. There will be time for a short discussion afterward.

The Never Dark Thursday series features a recital by David Reynolds, director of the SDSU School of Performing Arts Sept. 19. SDSU student Micah Perry, who participated in the Austrian American Mozart Academy in July and August, will perform Sept. 26.
