Newell girls, Ipswich boys take Class B championships

RAPID CITY – Newell senior Delaney Leber was medalist and helped lead the Irrigators to the team title at the Class B State Girls’ Cross Country Meet on Saturday afternoon at Hart Ranch.

Leber, who placed fifth in 2016, clocked a 5K time of 19 minutes, 52.33 seconds to edge Deubrook Area’s Josie Olsen, who crossed in 19:55.83. Olsen, a junior, was runner-up for the second consecutive season.

Newell, coming off a runner-up placing a year ago, finished with 22 team points and defending-champion Ipswich was second at 38. The Dolphins were third at 42.

It marked the first state title for the Irrigators.

Ipswich’s Aleah Steger placed third individually for the second time in a row with a time of 20:03.55. Deubrook’s Andrea Vandermeer took fourth with a 20:11.95 clocking. Dakota Hills’ Victoria Zirbel (20:14.88) rounded out the top five.

Lake Preston’s Ashlyn DeKnikker had a time of 21:00.85, putting her in 20th. Arlington’s Tessa Nelson (22:10.94) took 52nd.

Shaylee DeBeer rounded out the Dolphins’ team tally, taking 54th in 22:13.75. Teammates Joeve Krier (23:14.96) and Cortney Bauman (23:49.66) were 79th and 91st, respectively.

Elkton-Lake Benton’s Callie Otkin (23:52.73) came in in 92nd and Colman-Egan’s Ava Mousel (24:03.68) finished 93rd.

Boys

RAPID CITY – Bison’s Daniel Burkhalter made it a hat trick, winning his third consecutive title during the Class B State Cross Country Meet on Saturday afternoon at Hart Ranch.

The senior won by more than a minute, clocking a time of 15 minutes, 41.27 seconds in the 5,000-meter race.

Burke/South Central’s Kray Person was runner-up for a second straight season in 16:50.14.

Gregory’s Aaron Voigt (16:57.65), Freeman Academy/Marrion’s Thaniel Schroeder (17:17.32) and Ipswich’s Colton Weeldreyer (17:26.12) were third through fifth, respectively. Voigt also took third in 2016.

Ipswich took the team crown – its first all-time – with 29 points, while Freeman Academy/Marion (32) was second and Burke/South Central (39) third.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland totaled 121 points in 14th.

Lake Preston’s Rhett McMasters led the area contingent, placing 22nd in 18:01.38.

Elkton-Lake Benton’s Miles Harming finished 24th with an 18:04.8 clocking.

Estelline’s Riley Benning (18:55.81) was 52nd.

Connor Spilde (18:57.02) finished 53rd, Jack Olson (19:14.32) 70th and Justin Casanova (19:20.02) 72nd for the Raiders’ team score. Also for ORR, Peyton Roti (19:24.96) was 76th and Robie Malisch (20:06.72) 96th.

Deubrook Area’s Mason Ramlo (19:20.96) and Parker Crooks (19:25.72) took 73rd and 77th, respectively. ELB’s Riley Hunter (19:35.32) ended up 84th.
