BROOKINGS – The State University Theatre and Dance program is pleased to announce this year’s season. All performances will be in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, which is on the South Dakota State University campus.
The season opens Oct. 14 with a musical adaptation of Steven King’s “Carrie.” Selections also include a new play by South Dakotan Larissa FastHorse (“The Thanksgiving Play”), a new version of community favorite “A Christmas Celebration,” a new play by Brookings native Amy Tofte (“Women of 4G”), its annual dance concert, and a theater production of “The Little Prince” designed for young audiences.
The 2021-22 State University Theatre and Dance season features:
• “Carrie: The Musical,” music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, book by Lawrence D. Cohen, based on the novel by Stephen King, Oct. 14-17, Oscar Larson Theatre.
Teenager Carrie White longs to be seen. At school, she’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, this killer musical features such hit numbers as “And Eve Was Weak” and “A Night We’ll Never Forget.”
Contains mild adult language and intense action.
• “The Thanksgiving Play,” by Larissa FastHorse, Nov. 18-21, Oscar Larson Theatre.
Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire, as a troupe of terminally “woke” teaching artists scrambles to create a pageant that somehow manages to celebrate both Thanksgiving Day and Native American Heritage Month.
Contains mature themes and mild adult language
• “A Christmas Celebration: A New Beginning,” Dec. 11-12, Oscar Larson Theatre.
A freshly reimagined version of an annual favorite. A blend of dance and theatrical elements celebrating themes rooted in the story of Christmas.
• “Women of 4G,” by Amy Tofte, Feb. 23-28, Fishback Studio Theatre.
Seventy-five years in the future, an all-female crew and their male captain depart on what appears to be a routine mission to Mars … until the captain is murdered and the real mission comes to light. Part murder mystery, part space thriller, 4G’s science fiction world asks questions about power, leadership, responsibility and ultimately, sacrifice.
Not recommended for all audiences due to some content and language.
• Spring Dance Concert, April 8-10, Oscar Larson Theatre.
The annual concert featuring the choreography of students and faculty from SDSU’s dance program.
• “The Little Prince,” by Aaron Randolph III with Daniel Rairdin-Hale, Amelia Fischer, Aaron Hook and Zachary Lawson. Based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, April 28-30, Oscar Larson Theatre.
In this adaptation of a novella published in 1943 by French writer and poet Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a pilot crash-lands in the desert and meets the Little Prince while trying to fix his plane. The child’s imagination, wonder and joy remind the pilot that growing up doesn’t mean giving up childlike ways.
