Nibbe leads Elks to win

MITCHELL – Matthew Nibbe scored 29 of his game-high 31 points in the second half, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds remaining, as Elkton-Lake Benton beat Mitchell Christian 56-53 in the first round of the Region 4B Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Monday night.

The Golden Eagles led 15-5 after a quarter and 25-18 at halftime.

Nibbe hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the third quarter as the Elks moved ahead 39-38. He knocked down two more treys and had 13 points in the fourth to help ELB hold on.

Devin Sopko added 10 points and Marcus Harming eight for the Elks. For Mitchell Christian (6-15), Alec Nelson dropped in 22 points and Ty Vander Pol added 14.

Elkton-Lake Benton (8-13) takes on Colman-Egan (15-5) in the quarterfinals today at 3:30 p.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland beat Howard 61-42 in the other first-round game. The Raiders (11-10) play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (15-5) at 6:30 p.m.
