Nine Jackrabbits earn academic honors

ELMHURST, Ill. – Nine South Dakota State swimming and diving student-athletes – six women and three men – were honored Thursday as members of the 2018 Summit League Academic All-League teams.

The Jackrabbits had the most honorees on the women’s side.

Katya Vakshteyn earned her second consecutive selection with a 3.86 GPA in pharmacy.

Richelle Bruyckere, Cassie Hendricks, Gabrielle Langerud, Emily Moore and Ashley Theobald were all named to the team for the first time.

Bruyckere has a 3.44 GPA in speech communication and French, while Hendricks has a 3.61 in exercise science. Moore and Langerud also study exercise science with GPAs of 3.89 and 3.60, respectively. Theobald earned her first selection with a 3.93 GPA in political science and agricultural leadership.

SDSU tied for the top spot with three selections on the men’s team.

Christopher Rumrill, Daniel Jacobson and Wyatt Rumrill were all repeat honorees.

Chrisristopher Rumrill earned his fourth consecutive selection with a 3.98 GPA in electrical engineering. Jacobson earned his second honor with a 3.41 GPA in biology and microbiology. Wyatt Rumrill garnered his second consecutive selection with a perfect 4.0 GPA in human biology.

To be eligible for the Summit League Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitions. Selections are based on a vote by the league members’ sports information directors and faculty athletics representatives.

A total of 22 student-athletes – 12 women and 10 men – were honored this season.

Sorbe honored

Brookings native and South Dakota sophomore Josh Sorbe earned the first honor of his career.

He was one of two athletes to post a 4.00 GPA.

At the Summit League Championships, Sorbe was part of the 800-yard freestyle relay that captured second place and broke the school record. He placed sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, eighth in the 400-yard individual medley and 12th in the 500-yard freestyle.

On the Coyote top-10 list, he ranks fifth in the 500-yard freestyle, sixth in the 400-yard individual medley and seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Sorbe is a political science and business administration major.
