No. 10 UT Martin tops Jackrabbits 10-5

AUBURN, Ala. – The South Dakota State equestrian team dropped a close matchup with No. 10 UT Martin, 10-5, Friday.

Alexa Maiello earned her second MOP of the season for her career-high 80-point performance in equitation on the flat.

SDSU dropped its first event 3-1, with Jacey Chorlton earning the Jacks’ their lone point in equitation over fences with a 77.

The Jackrabbitss pulled within 4-3 at the halfway point of the meet after taking horsemanship by a 2-1 margin. Jadyn Taylor rode for a career-high 73.5, while Jordan Gates tied a season-high with a 73 to earn the two points.

Maiello scored 80 on her MOP ride in equitation on the flat to earn the Jacks a point. But despite Chorlton’s season-high score of 84, SDSU dropped the event 3-1 to give UT Martin a 7-4 lead going into the final event.

Gates (71.5) and Cassidy Gardiner (64.5) each posted season-high scores in reining, but it was Amelia Nelson who secured a point for SDSU to finish reining 3-1 in favor of UT Martin.

SDSU (1-3) faces No. 1 ranked Auburn today at 11 a.m.
