FLANDREAU – Fifth-ranked Dell Rapids overcame Dylan LeBrun’s fast start, controlling the middle quarters during a 61-43 defeat of Region 3A foe Flandreau on Monday night in front of a big crowd at the Fliers’ gymnasium.

LeBrun posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Fliers raced out to a 9-2 lead – it took the Quarriers more than 4 1/2 minutes to get on the board – and were on top 14-11 after a quarter. LeBrun scored all his team’s points in the opening stanza.

Five different Quarriers found the scoring column in the second stanza – Jeffrey Schuch and Mason Schmidt both tallied five markers – as the visitors opened up a 27-20 halftime advantage.

Flandreau was limited to just three field goals in the second stanza, including one by LeBrun, who was whistled for a technical foul midway through the period.

The Quarriers’ first lead of the contest came at 20-18 at the 3:25 mark of the second.

Dell Rapids turned to the long ball in the third frame, knocking down six 3-pointers while outscoring Flandreau 25-12 in the 8-minute span. That put the visitors ahead 52-32 heading to the fourth.

Schmidt finished with 16 points to lead Dell Rapids.

Schuch added 11 points, Sheldon Siemonsma 10, Mason Peter eight, Tenner Heim seven, Carson Rentz five and Austin Ellingson four.

Six Quarriers made at least one 3-pointer, as the team finished with eight.

Dell Rapids improved to 10-2 while passing idle Madison (9-3) – the top-ranked team in the Class A poll – for the top spot in Region 3A.

The Quarriers’ lone losses this season have been an 81-72 setback to No. 2 Sioux Valley (12-2) during the Entringer Classic on Dec. 31 in Brookings and an 85-61 defeat at No. 4 Sioux Falls Christian (8-3), which is currently third in seed points in the region, on Jan. 10.

Dell Rapids returns to action with a game at Tea Area tonight.

For the Fliers, Dalyn Bakkedahl added 12 points, four steals and three rebounds.

Xavier Pavlis hit a pair of treys for six points and grabbed three boards. Nathan Kneebone, who had six rebounds, and Teddy Taylor added two points apiece.

Flandreau (12-2), which is fourth in the region, plays host to Sioux Valley on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Cossacks handed the Fliers their only other defeat of the season, 62-51, in the Big East Conference Tournament on Jan. 7 in Garretson.
