No contest plea to aggravated assault

BROOKINGS – A Brookings man pleaded no contest this week to a charge alleging he assaulted a man last May, causing serious injuries.

Nathaniel King, 33, entered the plea to aggravated assault in Brookings County Circuit Court Tuesday. He was indicted by a Brookings County grand jury May 24.

A probable cause statement from Brookings Police says that on May 7, King beat the victim with a dumbbell, computer and lamp at a Brookings residence.

Brookings County State’s Attorney Dan Nelson said the victim was struck repeatedly and suffered facial fractures.

In exchange for the plea, Nelson is recommending a sentence of eight years in prison and will bring no additional charges in the case.

Circuit Judge Greg Stoltenburg is not bound by the eight-year recommendation at sentencing March 24.

Stoltenburg accepted King’s plea and ordered a pre-sentence investigation.

Aggravated assault is a Class 3 felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
