16 new COVID-19 cases, one new death reported in South Dakota Thursday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 16 new COVID-19 cases and one new death in South Dakota Thursday.

None of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases remain at 4,235 total cases: 4,192 of those people have recovered (one new), with six active cases (down by one) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 14,150 people have tested negative in Brookings County (13 new), and 136 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

The county is in the “minimal” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 124,393 (16 new confirmed) as of midday Thursday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 165 are classified as active (down by five from Wednesday). As of Thursday, 122,201 people have recovered (15 new), 6,918 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point, 28 people are currently hospitalized (no change) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,027 people with COVID have died (one new).

The SDDOH website reports 361,164 people (363 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new death was a woman in her 70s from Pennington County.

The SDDOH website reported midday Thursday that 676,978 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 361,803 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System.

In Brookings County, 27,419 vaccine doses have been administered to 14,798 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Thursday, 42.2% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 49.6% of those 12 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

The SDDOH reports 56.1% of the state population age 12 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, and 51.4% of the state’s 12-and-older population has completed its vaccination series.
