OG dominates Class AA tourney

WATERTOWN – Sioux Falls O’Gorman, led by Shannon McCormick and Carly Kunkel, was dominant on Tuesday, winning its third consecutive Class AA State Girls’ Golf Tournament title.

The Lady Knights closed with a 13-over-par 301 at Cattail Crossing for a two-day total of 614 and an incredible 55-stroke victory.

Yankton (333) and Aberdeen Central (337) tied for second at 669.

McCormick closed with an even-par 72 – the low round of the tourney by three shots – for a 5-over 149 total to take medalist honors.

She made two birdies and two bogeys.

Kunkel, the first-round leader, carded a second consecutive 75 and finished second at 6-over 150 – one stroke back. She was also runner-up in 2017 and ended up fifth a year ago.

Mitchell’s Masy Mock (75) placed third at 152. Watertown’s Megan Dockter (75) and Harrisburg’s Reese Jansa (76) tied for fourth with 153 totals.

Aberdeen Central’s Cassidy Gough (76) placed sixth at 154 and teammate Brooklyn Hofer (75) ended up seventh with a 36-hole score of 157.

Sophie Jansa and Jenna Sutcliffe both fired 77 to complete OG’s Round 2 team tally. They tied for eighth with teammate Sophia Salter (78) at 158.

Salter finished second last season.

Brookings shot 382 on Day 2 and jumped one spot to finish 14th in the team standings with a 779 total.

Freshman Ashton Austreim capped a solid tourney with an 87. She tied for 29th – four spots (six strokes) away from a medal – with a 177 total.

Senior Nicole Steen shot 94 and tied for 53rd at 193.

Sophomore Janaya Kuehl shot 96 and seventh-grader Delilah Fuls contributed a 105 to round out the second-round team score.

Kuehl was 63th with a 199 total and Fuls ended up 76th at 210.

Freshman Paige Mahlke (106) finished 81st at 219 and senior Morgan Herold (125) was 90th with a 250 total

Notes: It marked O’Gorman’s 16th state girls’ golf team title to go with 10 runner-up finishes. … The Lady Knights have finished in the top two every year since 2007. They won in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018 and were second in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2016. … OG also won championships in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 2000 and was second in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001. … O’Gorman has crowned 10 individual state medalists while adding 11 runner-up finishers.
