Olson nets 47 in win over Deuel

VOLGA – Trevor Olson went wild as the Cossacks returned to their winning ways in dominating fashion.

The senior scored 37 of his school-record-tying 47 points after halftime during Sioux Valley’s 99-47 defeat of Deuel in a Lake Central Conference boys’ basketball matchup Tuesday night.

“He started throwing in lefties and righties and floaters and fadeaways – everything was going for him,” Sioux Valley head coach Bill Vincent said of Olson’s big night.

He matched teammate Trevor Hanson’s 47-point performance accomplished in a 99-65 win over St. Francis Indian on Dec. 27.

Sioux Valley shot 63.3 percent (38-of-60) from the field and went 14-of-23 from long range.

“I thought we got into some offensive flow early on and I think that was a credit to a couple things – our defense and our bench play getting involved. They really brought a lot of energy early on in the first quarter,” added Vincent.

Olson thrived in transition throughout and got hot from deep in the second half. He ended up 18-of-25 and hit seven 3-pointers – all of which came after the break.

Hanson posted a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Schuster added 10 markers and Max Nielson eight.

The Cossack bench came through with 26 points.

“That was good and they deserved that,” Vincent said. “We came in with a mindset to get them involved because maybe we went long and strong in Sioux Falls (on Saturday). They’re capable of bringing a lot of things to our team, and people got to witness that tonight.”

Sioux Valley was ahead 24-15 after a quarter. Leading by seven, the reserves sparked a 13-0 run to end the second period.

Brennan Stoltenberg – who ended up with eight points – got it going with a personal 5-0 spurt, burying a trey and then scoring in transition on an assist from Chase Ringheimer, who set up the runout with a steal.

Tyler Schwartz scored on a drive to the bucket and Noah Puetz also converted in the lane.

The starters returned late in the stanza as Hanson went 2-of-2 at the foul line and Schuster added a putback to make it 43-23 at halftime.

Olson scored 16 points in the third to help the home team push the margin to 69-33. He hit five 3s and had 21 points in the final quarter.

The Cardinals’ Kellan Benck had 16 points and Isaac Ronne added 10.

Deuel (9-8, 1-3) heads to Tiospa Zina on Friday.

Sioux Valley (16-2, 4-1) closes out LCC play Tuesday at Castlewood. The Cossacks wrap up the regular season playing host to Garretson on Friday, Feb. 16.

Bounce back

Sioux Valley was coming off a 76-69 loss – its second setback of the season – to undefeated Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon Classic in Sioux Falls.

“The guys were hungry to get back out here,” noted Vincent. “We had kind of a rough practice (Monday) but bounced back. We’ve been talking about that we really needed to perform at home; maybe we hadn’t done that all that well this year.

“We’ve kind of called ourselves road warriors and had been out battling, but the hometown fans kind of got to see the display that we can put on when we get going.”

The defeat snapped the Cossacks’ 14-game winning streak.

LCC

Sioux Valley can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win over Castlewood. The Cossacks are currently tied for first with Clark/Willow Lake.

The Cyclones beat the Cossacks 73-58 on Dec. 9 in Volga but fell 56-52 at Deuel last Friday. CWL is host to Flandreau (2-2 LCC) on Saturday in Willow Lake in its LCC finale.
