10 new COVID-19 deaths, 319 new cases reported in South Dakota Thursday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 10 new COVID-19 deaths and 319 new cases in South Dakota Thursday.

One new death and 17 of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,254 total cases (five new confirmed and 12 new probable): 2,988 of those people have recovered (13 new), with 234 active cases (up by three) and 32 deaths (one new). A total of 10,474 people (40 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 114 people (one new) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Thursday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 104,512 (319 new – 234 confirmed plus 85 probable) as of midday Thursday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,728 are classified as active (down by 34 from Wednesday). As of Thursday, 98,170 people have recovered (341 new), 5,998 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (20 new), 247 people are currently hospitalized (down by six) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,614 people have died (10 new).

The SDDOH website reports 283,660 people (556 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, four women and six men, are being reported in Brookings, Brown (2), Clark, Custer, Day, Jackson, Oglala Lakota and Pennington (2) counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years, three 60-69 years, four 70-79 years and two in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Thursday included, but are not limited to, 20 in Lincoln County, 72 in Minnehaha, 50 in Pennington and 24 in Union.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,189), Pennington (11,931), Lincoln (7,162), Brown (4,723) and Codington (3,641).

The SDDOH website reported midday Thursday that 51,360 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 41,755 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,261 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,045 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
