Nine new COVID-19 deaths, 185 new cases reported in South Dakota Sunday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting nine new COVID-19 deaths and 185 new cases in South Dakota Sunday.

One new death and four of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,366 total cases (four new confirmed): 3,127 of those people have recovered (nine new), with 206 active cases (down by seven) and 33 deaths (one new). A total of 10,745 people (22 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 116 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Sunday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 107,148 (185 new – 154 confirmed plus 31 probable) as of midday Sunday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,005 are classified as active (down by 16 from Saturday). As of Sunday, 101,438 people have recovered (192 new), 6,193 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (16 new), 162 people are currently hospitalized (down by 10) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,705 people have died (nine new).

The SDDOH website reports 290,091 people (634 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, five women and four men, are being reported in Aurora, Brookings, Charles Mix, Lincoln, Minnehaha (2), Oglala Lakota, Todd and Ziebach counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years, one 50-59 years, two 60-69 years, two 70-79 years and three in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Sunday include, but are not limited to, 12 in Brown County, 10 in Lincoln, 39 in Minnehaha and 35 in Pennington.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,760), Pennington (12,241), Lincoln (7,366), Brown (4,844) and Codington (3,711).

The SDDOH website reported midday Sunday that 75,683 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 58,538 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 2,009 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,644 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
