Optimists learn about Brookings housing market

Posted

This week’s Brookings Optimist Club program was Arlo Jurrens with an update on the current Brookings housing market.

Jurrens has been involved in real estate since 2012 and is currently workings with Century 21 in Brookings, and has also been a proud member of law enforcement for over 19 years.

Jurrens said that over the past year, the housing market has slowed down and essentially stabilized. Interestingly, as the Brookings market has slowed, the overall area that he serves has increased in sales by 5 percent.

Currently in Brookings, there are 59 properties for sale; however, Jurrens discussed that many of those properties are at a higher price point than many first-time homebuyers are able to afford.

He estimated that of those 59 properties, it is likely that only approximately 10-15 of those properties would be affordable for a married couple earning a $15 per hour salary.

Jurrens suggested that homebuyers take their time while considering the purchase of a home, and to consider homes costing 10 percent less than their preapproval amount to account for unplanned expenses.
