BROOKINGS — Two men are each facing a charge of sexual contact with a child following unrelated incidents in the city that were reported over the weekend, according to information from Detective Adam Smith with the Brookings Police Department.

Anthony Caldwell

On Sunday, the BPD took a report that a juvenile female was sexually assaulted by a family member at a Brookings residence.

Caldwell, 60, was arrested following a BPD investigation and remains in the Brookings County Detention Center as of Monday afternoon on a $25,000 cash bond. The charges against him are felony sexual contact with a child under age 16 and fourth-degree rape.

The alleged victim in the case is 13 years old.

Meyer Lonzano Garrido

On Saturday, a report came into the BPD that a juvenile female was sexually assaulted by a family member at a residence in Brookings.

The alleged incident occurred Thursday and, following a BPD investigation, led to the arrest of Meyer Lonzano Garrido, 34. He, too, remains in the BCDC on a $15,000 cash bond as of Monday, and has been charged with felony sexual contact with a child under age 16.

According to South Dakota law, felony sexual contact with a child under age 16 and fourth-degree rape are both Class 3 felonies punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
