Passive House to hold ribbon cutting

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University’s Passive House project will hold a ribbon-cutting celebration at 11 a.m. Oct. 15 at 902 Third Ave.

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, SDSU President Barry Dunn and Provost Dennis Hedge will be in attendance. Rick Lee, president of the First Bank & Trust Community Development Corporation, and SDSU’s Department of Architecture faculty and students will also be recognized.

SDSU’s Department of Architecture received a grant from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development in 2016 to help fund the construction. The plan is to have the sale of one house fund the construction of an ensuing project.

The house started in fall 2016 when six graduate students designed it as part of an advanced studio. Brookings Built Green served as the house’s contractor.

“The house is planned to be the first of hopefully many student-designed projects to come, all of them expected to challenge and exceed typical energy and construction standards,” said Associate Professor Charles MacBride. He and Robert Arlt, an instructor and certified passive house consultant, have overseen the project for the department. “The students were responsible for technical and material specifications, establishing new project partners, working with the neighborhood and city, and the house design itself.”
