Patty Jean Porter, 64, of Brookings, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at Brookings Health System, Brookings. Memorial services have been set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, at Ascension Lutheran Church, Brookings. Memorial Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial be donated to The Neighborhoods at Brookview or Brookings Health System Auxiliary, Brookings.
Patricia Jean Kohler was born June 14, 1954. in Huron, the daughter of Robert and Delores (Gehring) Kohler. She lived most of her school years on First Street in Brookings, where she met and later married her husband Mark W. Porter on January 31, 1975. She graduated from Brookings High School in 1972.
Patty was employed at the Coast to Coast Warehouse as a receiving clerk, until it closed. She then worked for the Brookings School District as a Special Education Teachers Assistant. She loved that job and students dearly.
Her son, Adam was born on July 19, 1982 and her life was filled with literally thousands of happy moments as she loved her family dearly and enjoyed time with them. Her two grandsons, Marcus and Bennett, were her pride and joy! Christmas was her time of the year.
She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, she loved being the President of the Hospital Auxiliary and helping at The Neighborhoods at Brookview. She also spent countless hours on her yard and in her “Secret Garden” that she had.
Patty is survived by her husband, Mark Porter of Brookings; her son, Adam Porter and his wife, Amy of Brookings; her two grandsons, Marcus and Bennett of Brookings; a sister-in-law, Avis Kohler and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Bruce Kohler.
