BROOKINGS – A Casey’s employee was nearly hit when he confronted a woman who allegedly drove off without paying for gas – for the second time, according to Brookings Police.
The incident was reported at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday and took place in the 500 block of 22nd Avenue, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.
“Spoke with an employee who indicated that there was an individual that was filling up with gas that they had recognized that was involved in a gas drive-off the week before,” Powers said.
The employee went outside.
“As he approached the vehicle, she got into the vehicle and when he attempted to stop her, she put the vehicle in gear and drove off at a high rate of speed,” Powers said.
“He said that to avoid being hit by the vehicle, he had to push himself away as it took off,” Powers said.
“We have information on the identity of the female suspect,” Powers said. “They were able to obtain license plate numbers on the vehicle.”
The driver is facing two counts of petty theft, one for each incident last week and Tuesday and “additional driving offenses for the way that they left the scene (Tuesday),” Powers said.
