BROOKINGS – Phase 2 of the Sixth Street project in Brookings is nearing completion, and Phase 3 will begin on Monday, depending on weather, the South Dakota Department of Transportation announced Friday.

Phase 3 work will include the following:

Eastbound traffic will be placed on the newly completed eastbound lanes while westbound traffic will remain on the westbound lanes.

The inside lanes will be closed in each direction to allow for Phase 3 median work to be completed.

The new permanent signals will be activated and functioning throughout the project at the intersections of Sunrise Ridge Road, Interstate 29 northbound ramps and 32nd Avenue.

The portable signals on Sixth Street and the temporary traffic signals on the Highway 14 bypass will be removed next week.

In addition, I-29 traffic from just south of Exit 132 to just north of Exit 133 will continue to be two-way for the next two to three weeks while remaining work under the structure can be completed.

The public is invited to attend weekly meetings to discuss progress and sequencing at 9 a.m. every Thursday at the Department of Transportation building at 2131 34th Ave., Brookings.

Interim completion for the project is Nov. 3, which includes Phases 0-2. The overall field completion date is June 30, 2018, which includes Phase 3.

The prime contractor on this $16.37 million project is BX Civil & Construction of Dell Rapids.
