The couple moved to a farm, where Phyllis helped with all the daily chores, as well as raised their children, Rodney, Joel, Curtis and Paula. The couple moved to Estelline in 1979, where Phyllis would provide daycare for many Estelline families for numerous years, with the help of Bud. She was a member of Hamlin Reformed Church, where she was involved with the Ladies Circle. Her favorite part of life was her family; she loved to see them and was always so excited when they could all be together.
