Pickup driver sought in hit-and-run with semi

ARLINGTON – A maroon pickup hit a semi and left the scene Monday, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident was reported at 6:54 a.m. Monday and occurred at the junction of U.S. Highway 14 and U.S. Highway 81, south of Arlington, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

A maroon pickup was traveling in the four-lane section of US14 going eastbound in the westbound lanes while going around the corner of the US14/US81 intersection. While doing this, a westbound semi was passing another westbound vehicle,” Sebring said.

“The semi driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision with the pickup, and the pickup struck the side of the trailer near the rear tires. The pickup entered the median and continued to travel eastbound after regaining control. The pickup and driver did not stop at the scene and fled,” Sebring said.

“The cost to repair the damage to the trailer is unknown at this time,” Sebring said.
