Plenty of fine fall events at the library

Posted

BROOKINGS – Summer is over, and fall has arrived. We aren’t slowing down at the Library though, and we have many great things happening this month.

Craft nights have become so popular that we are now offering two craft nights each month. Registration is required for craft nights, so stop in or call to claim your spot. The first craft night is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6. We will paint kindness rocks. Our second craft night this month is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25. We will make paperback book pumpkins.

Looking to join a book club? We’ve got plenty of options! At noon Monday, Sept. 10, Booked for Murder will meet to discuss the works of the mystery authors that will be at the Festival of Books at the end of the month, such as William Kent Krueger. Non-fiction book club meets at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, and will discuss “The Long Haul.”

We will have some guests joining us to talk about their experiences as truck drivers.

The Brookings Public Library is taking part in PBS’ The Great American Read. It is an eight-part series that explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved novels.

It investigates what these 100 different books have to say about our diverse nation and our shared human experience. Beginning Monday, Sept. 10, we’ll begin showing the five one-hour theme episodes that look at concepts common to groups of books on the list and the finale that announces the results of the nationwide vote for America’s best-loved book. Each Monday this month we will show another episode. The final episodes will be shown in October. Stay tuned!

Our Great American Read Book vs. Movie continues this month with “The Lovely Bones.”  We will watch the movie at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, and then discuss the book at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19. Fiction book club will join this discussion as “The Lovely Bones” is also September’s book club choice.

We are doing another escape room, Sept. 11 through 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Call or stop in to sign-up for a time to test your skills against our Escape Room.

Aunt Frieda’s Millions

Your Great Aunt Frieda has recently passed away, but before she died, she mailed you, her favorite relative, a sealed letter and a key to her apartment with explicit instructions not to open the letter until she’s gone. Family rumor says that Aunt Frieda squirreled away millions of dollars from investments over the years. Maybe the letter tells you how to find it!

Read the letter and search her apartment quick, because your other relatives will descend upon the apartment to search themselves in 20 minutes!

Every second Friday of the month we have Game Night, at 6:30 pm. Patrons 14+ are invited to come play board and card games. Join us this month from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. Games will be available to play, or you can bring your own to get a group playing.

After a brief break, our children’s programming starts back up again this month. Story times begin again on Monday, Sept. 17. Call or stop in to register your child for Music Makers at 6:15 p.m. on Mondays or 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Baby Bounce at 10 a.m. on Mondays. Family Science Night is back at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25. Families are encouraged to come between 6:30 and 8:30 to explore science topics. This great event is held the last Tuesday of every month.

Mark your calendars for the Friends of the Library Falls Book Sale, Oct. 17-21. Wednesday, Oct. 17, is the friends preview sale. You must be a Friend of the Library to shop on Wednesday. Not a Friend? Not a problem. You can sign-up for a membership at the door. Please note: we are no longer taking donations for the upcoming book sale. Donations will resume Monday, Nov. 5.

Ashia’s book recommendation: “The Cheerleaders,” by Kara Thomas. Five years ago the cheerleader in Sunnybrook died.

Two died in a terrible car accident, two were murdered, and finally Monica’s sister committed suicide.  As the 5-year anniversary draws near Monica would like to just forget what happened, but as strange letters, an old cell phone, and a new friend at school bring everything back, and maybe whatever happened five years ago isn’t over yet.
