Post 74 Jr. Legion sweeps Huron

HURON – The Brookings Post 74 Junior Legion ran their winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Huron on Wednesday at Legion Field in Huron.

Brookings ran away with the opener, 19-2, before completing the sweep with a 8-0 shutout in game two.

Post 74 (10-14) hosts the Fargo Post 400 Junior Legion today at 5 p.m. at Bob Shelden Field.

Game One

 Brookings 19, Huron 2 (3 inn.)

Winston Plummer had two hits including a home run, finishing with seven runs batted in, while Owen Schneider also homered and drove in four as Post 74 rolled to a 19-2 win in three innings.

Plummer’s bomb came in the first inning with two on, giving Brookings a 3-0 lead.

After Huron answered with a run in their half of the first inning, Post 74 added four more runs in the top of the second as Sam Johnson and Plummer each had run-scoring hits while Nolan Miles’ sacrifice fly also scored a run.

Brookings sent 17 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring 12 runs to blow open the game.

Schneider’s homer came with one on base to give Post 74 a 13-1 lead after Brookings had already scored four runs on a base hits from Miles as well as on Post 7 defensive mistakes.

Johnson, Jack Merritt, and Miles for the second time in the inning had run-scoring hits while Jacob Kahle’s bases loaded walk also forced in a run.

Schneider capped off the inning with a two-run double to give Brookings a 19-1 lead.

Huron would score a single run in the bottom of the third but could not cut the lead to under 15 runs, ending the game after three innings.

Merritt finished 4-for-4 with an RBI while Schneider had three hits and four RBI.

Johnson also had three hits and two RBI while Miles drove in three with three base hits.

Tyson Antonen earned the win, tossing all three innings while allowing just one hit, two runs (zero earned) and striking out two.

Game Two

 Brookings 8, Huron 0 (5 inn.)

David Brink’s three-hit shutout paced Post 74 in the shortened game, needing just 44 pitches along the way. He struck out three.

Brookings rapped out nine hits with Miles and Addison Ronning having two each, while Merritt, Johnson, Schneider, Griffen Bartels and Will Conrad all had one hit each.
