Post raising support to help troops, veterans

BROOKINGS – In an effort to support troops and veterans, the VFW George Dokken Post 2118 is having a fundraising campaign beginning this month to help raise funds and awareness through a program called the Veterans and Military Support Program. This program includes Operation Uplink, UnMet Needs Program, Military Assistance Program and the VFW’s Sports Clips- Help a Hero Scholarship Program. 100% of the donations received for these support services goes to help the active duty and veteran population, there are no administrative fees involved.

As a part of this fundraising effort, participating Burger King restaurants will be raising funds throughout the month of November for the VFW’s UnMet Needs Program.

Patrons are encouraged to donate $1 or more to the program upon checkout. This program provides financial assistance to service members and military families during times of financial hardship, providing them financial grants toward basic life necessities like rent, mortgage and utility payments, vehicle repair, medical expenses and food. Since it’s inception, UnMet Needs has provided more than $12 million dollars in aid to nearly 11,000 service members, veterans and their families.

Since 2007, Burger King franchises have raised more than $6 million in support of this program, $800,000 in 2018. The Military Assistance Program has sponsored events supporting over 2.3 million service members and their families.

One part of this program is the Adopt-a-Unit Program where the goal is to develop supportive relationships with the units, before, during and after deployment. Operation Uplink has assisted deployed and hospitalized troops with providing “Free Call Days,” and has provided more than 11 million free connections or calls for service members and their families.

The VFW provides assistance in obtaining any benefits from these programs and others. Please contact the VFW Post 2118 if you have any questions or need help. Please help us to support the continuation of these programs by donating to VFW Post 2118 with the program you wish to donate to on the memo line and send it to: VFW George Dokken Post No. 2118, 520 Main Avenue, Brookings, SD 57006.
