SIOUX FALLS – Mike Daum dropped in 33 points as South Dakota State beat Denver 83-73 in a Summit League Men’s Basketball Championship quarterfinal Sunday evening at the PREMIER Center.

The point total is tied for the seventh most in tournament history – five off the record – and the most points ever scored by a Jackrabbit in a tourney game.

Daum went 9-of-18 from the field at 13-of-15 at the free-throw line while also grabbing six rebounds.

Reed Tellinghuisen added 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and had nine rebounds. Chris Howell chipped in with 10 markers.

The Jackrabbits used an early 10-0 run to grab a 14-7 advantage.

Later, Daum hit a 3-pointer and added a layup to make it 24-13 at the 9:55 mark.

Daum’s bucket with 8:02 to go made it 29-15.

The first-half lead reached 17 points – 34-17 with 6:53 left – following a pair of A.J. Hess foul shots and another Daum trey.

Denver closed within 43-36 at halftime.

SDSU wasted little time pushing the margin back to double figures after the break as Howell, Tellinghuisen and Daum scored down low in the first 64 seconds to make it 49-36.

Joe Rosga canned a 3-ball for the Pioneers. Daum hit two free throws and Denver’s Daniel Amigo scored in the paint, leaving the score at 51-41 with 17:33 showing on the clock.

SDSU then rattled off 10 consecutive points to break the game open.

Tellinghuisen and Lane Severyn canned back-to-back 3s. Daum and Tellinghuisen scored down low to put SDSU up 61-41 with 15:30 to play.

“We talked to our team for quite a bit before the game emphasizing the rebounding battle,” said SDSU coach T.J. Otzelberger, whose team held a 36-31 advantage on the glass and committed nine turnovers to the Pioneers’ 13. “We feel like Denver is a really good rebounding team and we knew that was going to be critical both on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. I’m really happy that our guys stepped up and responded in that way – to outrebound a great that that’s physical and goes to the glass.

“I was really pleased in that second half, the effort and energy we started out with. I felt like at the end of the first half, we got a little stagnant. And our guys really responded in a major way to start the second half, so I’m really proud of them.”

For Denver (16-14), scored all 16 of his points in the first half. Joe Rosga and Ade Murkey posted 10 points apiece.

Fourth-seeded South Dakota State (16-16) faces top-seeded South Dakota (24-8) in the first semifinal tonight at 6.
