BROOKINGS – The Jackrabbits jumped out of the gate to build a 19-point halftime lead on the way to a 94-63 nonconference rout of Alabama State on Tuesday night at Frost Arena.

South Dakota State knocked down 30-of-56 shots attempts, including a school record 17-of-29 from beyond the arc to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

SDSU opened the game with a 12-1 run and went up by 19 – 39-20 – after Reed Tellinghuisen’s 3-pointer with 2:13 left in the half.

David Jenkins Jr. highlighted the first 20 minutes of effort on a four-point play with 3 seconds to play after knocking down a 3-pointer, and the ensuing free throw, when he was fouled.

SDSU went up by 31 points, 69-38, at the 10:45 mark of the second frame following a 3-pointer by Skyler Flatten.

The Jacks’ advantage ballooned to 40 points when Dallas Polk-Hilliard dropped a 3 from the top of the key to make it 81-41 with 7:58 to play.

Mike Daum finished with five 3-pointers and went 7-of-7 from the foul line to post a double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds, while David Jenkins, Jr. also hit five treys en route to 20 points on the night.

The Jacks dished out 23 assists, led by Brandon Key’s seven, as they shot their best from the floor this season – 30-of-56 for 53.6 percent.

“I was really happy with how our guys shared the ball once we got into a rhythm offensively,” SDSU head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “Twenty-three assists stands out to me that our guys are really sharing it. Obviously, when you make a lot of 3-point shots that’s going to happen, but I thought a lot of the guys gave great contributions.” Game Notes (from SDSU SID) – South Dakota State matched the school record for team 3-pointers in a game with 17, set last season against Fort Wayne on Jan. 21, 2017.

GAME NOTES (SDSU SID) – 23 assists are the most by a Jackrabbit team since Nov. 30, 2016 when SDSU did it against Minnesota Crookston… Daum moved into ninth in career scoring at SDSU with 1,460 points, passing Garrett Callahan (2006-10; 1,449)… Daum is now eighth in school history with 487 career free throw attempts.
