BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University associate professor Aaron Ragsdale will perform the premiere of “Captions” during his faculty percussion recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Lincoln Music Hall’s Peterson Recital Hall. The on-campus recital is open to the public and free to attend.

Ragsdale, the Patricia Noethe-Pierce Artist-In-Residence, will preview several works he will be performing in May at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Peter Norton Symphony Space in New York City.

Gene Koshinski, professor of percussion at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, wrote “Captions,” a multimovement piece scored for a single player performing on a multiple percussion setup built around vibraphone, glockenspiel and finger cymbals. Individual movements call for adding color through the use of wind chimes, a thunder tube, a suspended cymbal and whistling.

Ragsdale will also perform “Goodnight Noises Everywhere,” “Long Distance” and “Attraction.” Each song is written for a marimba and vibraphone. “Attraction” will take approximately nine minutes to play while the percussion version of “Goodnight Noises Everywhere” is also a premiere.
