Raiders, Hawks and both Cardinals win first-round DVC games

The seedings for the first round of the Dakota Valley Conference Boys’ Basketball Tournament held true to form – for the most part anyway.

No. 5 seed Oldham-Ramona/Rutland pulled off the only upset as the Raiders rallied past fourth-seeded Deubrook Area, 46-41, to advance.

In the other game in the top half of the bracket, top-seeded Arlington cruised past Estelline, 80-34.

Second-seeded Colman-Egan had little trouble in a 59-49 win over No. 7 Elkton-Lake Benton, but third-seeded Dell Rapids St. Mary needed triple overtime to put away No. 6 Lake Preston, 70-68.

The second round of the DVC Tournament tips off on Thursday with consolation action starting at 6 p.m. and the championship-round matches going at 7:30 p.m.

In Lake Preston, the Elks face the Divers in the early game while the Hawks and DRSM battle in the late game.

In Estelline, the host Redmen match up with the Dolphins, and then, the Cardinals take on ORR in the late game.

In Estelline

 Arlington 80, Estelline 34

Arlington jumped out to a 17-5 lead after the first eight minutes; pushed the advantaged to 35-12 at halftime; and led 61-29 heading into the final frame to improve to 6-3 on the season.

Will Parry led a trio of Cardinals with 18 points as Devon Heuer added 16 points and eight rebounds. Trevor Larsen chipped in with 16 points and four assists while Scott Sampson corralled seven boards and Casey Stegeman contributed three blocks as Arlington shot 30-of-62 from the floor (48 percent).

Marcis Hausman led the Redmen, 0-10, with nine points and five rebounds. Thomas West finished with eight points and Riley Benning pulled down five boards.

• Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 46, Deubrook Area 41

Trailing 36-25 heading into the fourth quarter, the Raiders rallied with a 21-5 run over the final 8 minutes to pull out the five-point win.

The game was tied 8-8 after a quarter and 18-18 at halftime before the Dolphins outscored ORR, 18-7, in the third.

Jeremiah Hoekman led a balanced Raider attack with 13 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists as Taylor Hojer added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jamus Brown chipped in with nine points, six boards, four steals and two assists while Hunter Breske contributed nine points, six assists and six rebounds as ORR improved to 5-4 overall.

Cody Bauman scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Deubrook Area, which dropped to 4-5 on the season. Clayton Koppatschek finished with 10 points and eight rebounds as the Raiders held a 42-27 edge on the boards, including 19-3 on the offensive end.

In Lake Preston

 Dell Rapids St. Mary 70, Lake Preston 68 (3 OT)

The Divers led at each quarter break – 11-10, 22-18 and 34-30 – before DRSM rallied to tie the game at 46-46 at the end of regulation. Both team scored seven points in each of the following OTs before the Cardinals outscored Lake Preston, 10-8, in the third overtime for the win.

Weston Geraets posted a double-double with 23 points and 17 rebounds to go along with four blocks to lead DRSM, 6-3. Connor Libis chipped in with 21 points and four steals as Luke Brown contributed 12 points and four assists. Connor Kangas added eight points, five steals and four dimes for the Cardinals.

Byron Bumann and Paydon Casper both had double-doubles for the Divers as Bumann dropped 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out nine assists. Casper finished with 17 points, 12 boards, seven steals, three assists and three blocks as Lake Preston dropped to 2-8.

 Colman-Egan 59, Elkton-Lake Benton 39

The Hawks jumped out to a 15-6 lead after a quarter; led 25-16 at halftime; and then, outscored Elkton-Lake Benton 24-8 in the third to put the game away.

The Elks did hold a 15-10 scoring edge in the final frame, but it was too little, too late as Colman-Egan improved to 5-4.

Dalton Voelker posted a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks while Bodee Groos just missed a double-double with 21 points and nine boards as Colman-Egan connected on 24-of-50 from the field, including 7-of-12 from beyond the arc (58 percent).

Matthew Nibbe’s 13 points and nine rebounds led ELB, which fell to 2-7. Devin Sopko added nine points and a pair of steals for the Elks.
