Rangers beat All Stars 5-0 in third-place game

FT. PIERRE – Top-seeded Sioux Falls proved it was worthy by beating Rushmore, 4-1, for the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association Varsity Boys’ state title on Sunday at the Oahe Expo.

Brookings shut out Huron, 5-0, for third while Sioux Center dominated Watertown, 6-1, to place fifth.

 Brookings 5, Huron 0

The Rangers set the tone early in their third-place matchup with Huron as Cody Niklason lit the lamp 40 seconds into the game off a Sean Sullivan setup.

That start helped Brookings to a 5-0 win over the All Stars as Philip Kuechenmeister earned the shutout win in goal with 17 saves.

Max Kjelden tallied an unassisted goal with less than 7 minutes to play in the first period before Austin Lesnar found the back of the net at the 4:35 mark with the assists going to Wes Koenig and Jamison Honkomp for a 3-0 lead after one.

Sullivan scored the only goal of the second period as Alec Nielson and Niklason provided the helpers.

Kjelden scored his second unassisted goal with 10:13 left in the game for the final margin as Brookings fired 40 shots at Huron’s Jacob Wehde, who finished with35 assists.

Championship

• Sioux Falls 4, Rushmore 1

The Thunder scored the only goal of the first period, but from there, it was all Sioux Falls as the Flyers netted four unanswered goals – all in the second period – to claim the state title.

Scott Kenrick spotted Rushmore the early lead off a Ryan Nolan assist less than 6 minutes into the game, but that would be the last time the Thunder lit the lamp as the Flyers went to work in the second period.

Nathan Fanning converted a power-play opportunity 25 seconds into the second as Braden Malwitz and Carson Kocmick set up the goal.

Nathan Moon’s goal with 13:05 on the clock gave Sioux Falls a 2-1 lead before Malwitz and Sam Siegel found the back of the net late in the frame to take a 4-1 advantage into the third period. Fanning helped Malwitz and Siegel’s was unassisted as the Flyers outshot Rushmore, 23-7, in the period.

The third period was scoreless but still filled with action – as the Thunder picked up 34 of their 46 total penalty minutes, including a pair of game misconducts by Mason Martin and Camden Nayman with 2:29 remaining.

For the game, the Flyers outshot Rushmore, 43-25, as Anthony Seykora finished with 24 saves for the win in goal. John Young stopped 39 shots in the loss.

Fifth Place

 Sioux Center 6, Watertown 1

The Storm sandwiched a pair of first-period goals around a Watertown score before lighting the lamp once in the second and then tacking on three more goals in the third.

Canyon Brown found the back of the net off Dayton Visser’s assist less than 7 minutes into the first and Lane Kamerman lit the lamp with 3:30 to play while in between, Mason Evans found the back of the net for the Lakers as Garrett Barse earned the assist. Brown and Grady Duden set up Kamerman.

Brown tallied his second goal late in the second period off another Visser setup to make it 3-1 through two.

Brown scored his hat trick goal less than 4 minutes into the third period before Trey VanBeek scored midway through for a 5-1 advantage as Duden picked up his second assist. Ben Lentell cashed in on a power-play chance with 17 seconds to play off setups by Yassine Ben Saida and Taylor De Jager for the final margin.

Sioux Center held a 32-27 edge in shots as Sunny Brown collected 26 saves in the win. For the Lakers, Karter Brandenburger stopped 11 of the 15 shots he faced in 22:06 while Jared Fedt had 15 saves out of 17 Storm shots.

Semifinals

 Rushmore 6, Brookings 0

The Thunder scored three goals in the first period; added two in the second; and tacked on one in the third to move into the championship game as Brookings went 0-for-7 on power-play chances.

Seth Stock opened the scoring 5 minutes into the game before Blake DeVries netted a short-handed goal with 11 minutes left in the period. Mason Martin cashed in on Rushmore’s only power-play opportunity of the game with 27 seconds remaining for a 3-0 lead after one.

DeVries and Martin scored late in the second to push the Thunder’s advantage to 5-0 through two.

Alec Humke netted a goal less than 5 minutes into the final frame as Rushmore held a 23-20 edge in shots.

John Young earned the shutout win in goal with 20 saves while Carter Schulz stopped 14-of-20 shots in the first 38:48 and Philip Kuechenmeister collected three saves on three shots in the final 12:12.

 Sioux Falls 3, Huron 2

Despite outshooting the All Stars, 40-22, Sioux Falls needed a third-period goal to advance to Sunday’s title game.

Huron’s Rei Hoops scored the only goal of the first period for a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Sam Siegel’s goal tied the game midway through the second before Grant Koerner scored a minute later to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. Xavier Erickson lit the lamp with 6:59 on the clock for the All Stars to make it 2-2 through two.

Carter Tobin found the back of the net less than 5 minutes into the final frame to give Sioux Falls the win as Anthony Seykora finished with 20 saves. Jacob Wehde stopped 37 Flyer shots in the loss.

First Round – Saturday

 Huron 5, Sioux Center 4

The All Stars led 1-0 after a period as Xavier Erickson scored a short-handed goal off an assist from Spencer Busch just 2 minutes into the game.

The Storm tied the score 2 minutes into the second on Grady Duden’s goal before Huron scored four straight goals to go up 5-1 through two. Erickson sandwiched a pair of goals – the second unassisted – around Walker Schiltz’ unassisted tally, and then, Cody Ruedebusch found the back of the net off Lucas Snyder’s setup. Carson Duba helped on Erickson’s first goal.

Sioux Center scored three goals in the in the last 8 minutes of the third period but came up one short as the All Stars advanced. Canyon Brown and Lane Kamerman tallied power-play goals before Kamerman made it 5-4 with 1:23 left.

Huron held a 40-36 edge in shots as Jacob Wehde finished with 32 saves for the win. For the Storm, Blake Cannegieter collected 10 saves on 11 shots in 22 minutes, nine seconds while Sunny Brown stopped 25 of the All Stars’ 29 attempts in 28:51.

 Sioux Falls 7, Aberdeen 3

The Flyers scored three times in the first period; added three more in the second; and then, tacked on one more in the third to advance to the semifinals.

Nathan Fanning and Carter Tobin scored in the first 5 minutes before Sam Siegel netted a power-play goal 5 minutes later heading into the first intermission.

Caleb Kranzler scored the Cougars’ first goal on a power play just 48 seconds into the second, but Sioux Falls answered with two goals of its own just 2 minutes apart – by Dylan Waxdahl and Cole Teigen – to go up 5-1. Aberdeen’s Braydon Jones and Trey Wagemann converted two more power-play chances to get within 5-3 before the Flyers’ Trey Ponto lit the lamp for a 6-3 advantage heading into the final frame.

Siegel provided for the final margin midway through the third with his second goal as Sioux Falls held a 51-18 advantage in shots as Fred Roufs earned the win with 15 saves. Matthew Feiock finished with 44 saves for the Cougars.

Consolation Semifinals

 Watertown 6, Oahe 5 OT

The Capitals got on the scoreboard late in the first period on Elliot Leif’s goal, but Watertown’s Coby Steiner netted a power-play goal to send the game into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

In the second, the Lakers scored back-to-back goals – one by Garrett Barse and another power-play tally by Steiner – to go up 3-1 less than 7 minutes into the second period. Oahe answered with Andrew Gordon’s power-play goal and a goal by Caden Davis with 3:06 left to make it 3-3 through two periods.

Alex Nygard put Watertown back in front less than 90 seconds into the third, but Leif’s goal tied it back up before Clay Ambach tallied a power-play goal to give the Capitals a 5-4 lead with 4:54 to play.

CJ Barton’s goal with 2:31 left tied the game at 5-5 and sent it to overtime.

Steiner netted his hat trick goal midway through the extra time to give the Lakers the 6-5 win.

Watertown outshot the Capitals, 39-31, as Karter Brandenburger finished with 26 saves in the win. Tate Mueller had 33 saves for Oahe in the loss.

 Sioux Center 3, Aberdeen 1

The Storm scored two of their three goals on power-play chances as Aberdeen earned 32 minutes of penalty-box time on 12 infractions.

Sioux Center’s Dayton Visser opened the scoring with a power-play goal less than 3 minutes into the game before Canyon Brown lit the lamp for a 2-0 lead after a period.

Jared Everson found the back of the net 6 minutes into the second frame to get the Cougars within 2-1 through two.

Fred Bullock’s power-play goal with 43 seconds to play provided for the final margin as the Storm outshot Aberdeen, 36-20, with Cannegieter earning the win in goal with 19 saves. Feiock stopped 33 Storm shots in the loss.
