SIOUX CENTER/ABERDEEN – The Rangers split a pair of South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association games over the weekend to move into sixth place in the league standings with six points with a 3-4 mark.
Brookings fell 5-2 to Sioux Center on Saturday before bouncing back with a 4-1 win at Aberdeen on Sunday.
The Rangers travel to Yankton on Friday before taking on Sioux Falls in the PREMIER Center on Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, the Rangers put up three goals in the second to take control of the game.
Austin Lesnar sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by Max Kjelden as Honkomp set up both of Lesnar’s goals and Wes Koenig assisted on Kjelden’s.
Ashton Witte’s power-play goal midway through the third period pushed the Rangers’ lead to 4-0 before the Cougars scored a late goal for the final margin. Alec Nielson and Ike Johnson picked up the helpers on Witte’s tally.
Brookings held a 35-15 edge in shots as Philip Kuechenmeister earned the win in goal with 14 saves. Matthew Feiock stopped 31 shots in the loss.

Despite holding a 40-27 edge in shots, the Rangers could only get two past Sioux Center goalie Blake Cannegieter in the loss.
Nielson lit the lamp just 29 seconds into the game off a Rice setup to get Brookings on the scoreboard first, but the Storm answered 6 1/2 minutes to tie the game after one period.
Sioux Center scored the only goal of the second and then, made it 3-1 early in the third before Rice lit the lamp off a Cody Niklason assist.
But that would be the Rangers’ last goal as the Storm added a pair of late goals for the final margin.
