Rangers beat Oahe, Watertown for weekend sweep

BROOKINGS – The Rangers ran their win streak to three games with a pair of South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association wins to improve to 7-4 in league play and third place in the standings with 14 points.

Brookings shut out Oahe, 8-0, on Saturday at Larson Ice Center, and then, beat Watertown, 9-4, at Maas Arena on Sunday.

The Rangers are on the road next weekend, taking on the Storm in Sioux Center on Saturday before a return matchup at the Capitals on Sunday.

After playing to a 1-1 tie after the first 17 minutes, the Rangers netted four goals in each of the next two periods to pull away to the 9-4 win.

Jaclyn Lloyd got the Lakers on the scoreboard first but Jadyn Peterson answered with an unassisted, short-hand goal with 1:28 left in the period.

Peterson added three more goals in the second and set up Brooklyn Roberts’ tally as Brookings built a 5-2 lead through two. Peterson’s first two goals were unassisted and the third was helped out by Savanna Barber on a power play.

Watertown closed within 5-4 with a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the final period, but the Rangers scored four unanswered over a four-minute span for the win.

Addie Ramlo lit the lamp off assists from Peterson and Emma Rice before Jenna Schulte netted the puck off Kiran Vugteveen’s helper. Barber made it 8-4 off another Vugteveen assist and then Alexis Schelske provided for the final margin with an unassisted tally with 3:38 left.

Brookings held a 35-24 edge in shots as Marina Gerstner collected 20 saves for the win.

The Rangers scored once in the first period and then added six more in the second to send the game into runtime for the complete third period.

Peterson lit the lamp off assists from Kruse and Ramlo for the 1-0 lead after one.

Barber started the second-period scoring off an assist from Schulte before Kuehl made it 3-0 off a Peterson helper. Peterson then scored off assists from Ramlo and Rice; and then, Ramlo and Kuehl scored as Peterson picked up both assists.

In the third period, Peterson and Kuehl tallied unassisted goals for the final margin as the Rangers outshot Oahe, 36-11, with Gerstner getting the shutout win in goal with 11 saves.
