Rangers drop a pair of one-goal games

BROOKINGS – The Rangers dropped a pair of one-goal games during South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association boys action, falling 3-2 to Watertown in overtime on Saturday and 7-6 to Huron on Sunday.

Brookings (12-3-1-1) closes the regular season this weekend, hosting Yankton on Friday at 8:15 p.m. before playing at Oahe on Saturday at 7 p.m. and at Huron on Sunday at 3 p.m. 

Sunday

 Huron 7, Brookings 6

Walker Schiltz netted the game-winning goal off an assist from Izaiah Phillips with 1:56 remaining.

Schiltz finished with six points – four goals and a pair of assists.

Phillips, Cody Ruedebusch and Jacob Maas also lit the lamp.

The Rangers got a hat trick from Ashton Witte. He also had an assist.

Max Kjelden had a goal and an assist. Breck Hirrschoff and Carter Shoup added goals. Carter Merritt, Trenton Pederson, Ike Johnson and Logan Bortnem dished out assists.

The All Stars led 2-1 after a period and 6-4 through two.

Witte scored on assists from Pederson and Kjelden with 9:52 to play in the game and then set up Kjelden’s equalizer with 3:08 left.

Cooper Letcher was the winning goalie, stopping 34 shots. Brookings’ Kade Brecher made 19 saves.

Saturday

 Watertown 3, Brookings 2, OT

Jacob Van Dusseldrop scored the game-winner 6:48 into overtime.

The Rangers struck first on Wes Koenig’s power-play tally off an assist from Max Kjelden.

The Lakers pulled even in the second on a Conner Bramer goal.

Talon Richter put the Rangers ahead 2-1 with 15:12 remaining in regulation. Alec Rice assist.

Mason Evans had the equalizer with 11:45 showing on the clock.

Owen McBride made 37 saves to earn the win in goal. Brookings’ Philip Kuechenmeister stopped 12 shots.
