BROOKINGS – The Rangers ran their league record to 5-0 with a 5-1 South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association win over Mitchell on Thursday night at Larson Ice Center.

Cody Niklason’s goal off a Carter Shoup setup with 9:47 to play in the first was the only one of the first 17 minutes as Brookings took a one-goal edge into the first intermission.

Less than 3 minutes into the second period, Austin Lesnar found the back of the net off an assist from Alec Nielson before Nielson lit the lamp off a Niklason assist to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead.

But the Marlins turned the table on a Brookings power play to tally a short-handed goal with less than a minute to play to make it 3-1 at the second break.

Dominic Dobesh pushed the lead back to three goals less than 3 minutes into the final period as Brandin Heesch earned the assist.

Three minutes after that, Trevor Kuechenmeister scored on an uassisted short-handed try for the final margin.

Brookings held a 38-10 advantage in shots as Dylan Geraets finished with nine saves for the win in net.

The Rangers have two weeks off before traveling to Rapid City to face the Thunder in a pair of games on Dec. 30-31.
