Rangers fall in season opener to Marlins

BROOKINGS – The Mitchell Marlins built a 3-1 lead after two periods and then outscored the Rangers, 3-2, in the third to post a 6-3 win in South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association action on Friday night at Larson Ice Center.

Jenna Grosdidier scored with 6 1/2 minutes on the clock to spot Mitchell the early lead, but Jadyn Peterson answered in the final minute of the period off an Janaya Kuehl assist to make it 1-1 after one.

Kelsey Amick lit the lamp with a pair of unassisted goals in the second period to give the Marlins a 3-1 advantage heading into the third.

Ashley Jones converted on a power-play chance to put Mitchell up 4-1 less than a minute into the final period before Grosdidier notched her second unassisted goal of the game to make it 5-1 with 8:14 left.

Addison Ramlo found the back of the net off a Montana Myer setup to pull the Rangers within 5-2 at the 5:47 mark, but Brooke Jarman pushed the margin back to four goals off a Jones assist with 3:29 left.

Peterson provided the final margin with 1:28 to play on a power-play goal as Kuehl and Savannah Barber earned the assists.

The Rangers held a 35-33 edge in shots on goal as Marina Gerstner stopped 27 Marlin shots in the loss. Katelyn Uithoven earned the win with 32 saves.

Brookings, 0-1, travels to Huron on Friday for an 8 p.m. match with the All Stars.
