Rangers go 0-2 at JV State

The Rangers posted a 0-2 record at last weekend’s Junior Varsity State Tournament to cap off their season.

Brookings, seeded fifth, fell 5-3 to No. 4 seed Fremont in Friday’s opening round; and then, dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to eighth-seeded Watertown on Saturday in the consolation bracket.

SATURDAY’S CONSOLATION SEMIFINAL

• Watertown 4, Brookings 3 (OT)

The Lakers dominated play in the first period as they outshot Brookings, 9-3, and scored the lone goal of the first 17 minutes when Aaron Falk lit the lamp with 12:35 to play off a Devin Matson assist.

The Rangers turned the table in the second period as Luc Bouchard found the back of the net twice – the first set up by Noah Drew and the second unassisted – before Jack McCarty beat the buzzer to make it 3-1 through two off a Dalton Rittershaus assist.

But Watertown scored two times in the third as Jacob Vandusseldorp netted them both – the first unassisted midway through the frame and the second unassisted with 4 minutes to play – to force overtime.

Three minutes into extra play, Mason Lloyd tallied an unassisted goal to end the Rangers’ season.

The Lakers held a 29-25 edge in shots as Philip Kuechenmesiter came up with 25 saves in the loss while Karter Brandenburger stopped 22 Ranger shots for the win.

FRIDAY’S QUARTERFINAL

• Fremont 5, Brookings 3

The Flyers built a two-goal lead as Andrew Hansen scored the only goal of the first period off assists by Ty Bradley and Jayden Delts before Bradley netted the puck less than a minute into the second off a Cullen Buscher helper.

Carter Merritt got the Rangers on the scoreboard 2 1/2 minutes into the second period as Trevor Pederson earned the assist, but Cade Bradley lit the lamp 2 minutes later to push Fremont’s lead to 3-1. With 4:18 left in the period, Dylan Park scored off a Merritt setup to make it 3-2 heading into the final frame.

Riley Mitchell scored with less than 7 minutes to play as Ty Bradley and Andrew Hansen picked up the assists for the Flyers, and then Ty Bradley added an insurance goal for a 5-2 advantage.

Merritt provided for the final margin when he lit the lamp with 5:05 left off assists from Jordan Svobodny and Noah Ronning.

The Rangers held a 34-18 edge in shots on goal as Fremont goalie Michael Turell came up with 31 saves to garner the win while Kuechenmeister collected 13 saves in the loss.
