Brookings beat Yankton 7-2 on Saturday at home but fell 9-2 to undefeated Aberdeen (16-0) on the road Sunday to close out the regular season.

Rangers post weekend split; finish third in standings

Brookings beat Yankton 7-2 on Saturday at home but fell 9-2 to undefeated Aberdeen (16-0) on the road Sunday to close out the regular season.

The Rangers went 15-5-1-0 and took third in the regular-season standings.

The state tournament is Friday through Sunday in Watertown.

Sunday

 Aberdeen 9, Brookings 2

Kiran Vugteveen and Mckenna Geraets scored for the Rangers. Assists went to Savannah Barber and Vugteveen.

The Cougars’ Morgan Dean had seven points (two goals/five assists). Danielle Podoll scored four times and added an assist. Kaitlyn Holland chipped in with two goals and three assists.

Ava Myhre stopped 10 shots for the win in goal.

Brookings’ Jadyn Runge made 31 saves.

Saturday

 Brookings 7, Yankton 2

BROOKINGS – Savannah Barber notched a hat trick and logged an assist to lead the Ranger charge.

Kiran Vugteveen also had four points – three assists and one goal – with Mckenna Geraets adding two goals and a helper.

Geraets opened the scoring on an assist from Alexis Schelske 22 seconds in. Barber’s first two goals came after Yankton pulled even, as Brookings was up 3-1 after a period.

Vugteveen and Garaets lit the lamp in the second to make it 5-1.

Addison Ramlo found the back of the net early in the third. Barber completed the hat trick with 1:46 remaining.

Schelske finished with two assists and Taryn Richter added one.

Ranger goalie Jadyn Runge made 15 saves for the victory. The Gazelles’ Jayda Tjeerdsma stopped 39 shots.
